What is Prosecco?

Prosecco is more popular than ever. Perfectly refreshing, effervescently delicious and available at a price point that can't be beat, this Italian sparkling wine is always one of our go-to's!. So let's dive into the bubbly world of Prosecco, a sparkling wine that's been winning hearts and palates across the globe.

What is Prosecco?

Prosecco is a delightful sparkling wine that comes from the Veneto region in northeastern Italy. It's made from the Glera grape, known for its fruity and floral characteristics, which contribute to Prosecco's lively and refreshing taste.

Prosecco DOC

Prosecco DOC spans a large territory north of Venice, encompassing nine provinces in the Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia regions (approximately 35,000 acres in total!) Prosecco enjoys the esteemed DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) status, ensuring that each bottle meets rigorous standards and guarantees authenticity and quality.

What Makes Prosecco Unique?

When it comes to bubbles, Prosecco typically has a lighter and more delicate effervescence compared to Traditionally-made sparkling wines like Champagne. This gives Prosecco a crisp and smooth mouthfeel that's perfect for casual sipping or pairing with all kinds of food. Prosecco is also an excellent choice if you’re looking to make a sparkling cocktail!

Prosecco gets its bubbles through a second fermentation that occurs in a sealed, stainless steel tank. This production method is called the Charmat Method. Many other sparkling wines, like Champagne, Crémant and Cava are made using the Traditional Method, in which the second fermentation occurs inside the bottle. This style of sparkling wine tends to produce a richer wine. Prosecco’s Charmat Method is great at preserving the wine’s fresh fruit flavors, creating a more fruit-forward and approachable style of sparkling wine.

Versatility at its Finest: Pairing Prosecco with Food

Prosecco is a versatile companion at the table. Its crisp acidity and light body make it a refreshing match for a variety of dishes:

  • Appetizers: Pair with bruschetta, seafood, or soft cheeses.
  • Dinner: Enjoy with light pasta dishes, risotto, or grilled chicken.
  • Desserts: Try it with fruit-based desserts or a lemon tart for an amazing contrast!

A Price Point That Can’t Be Beat

One of the charms of Prosecco is its accessibility. Unlike many other sparkling wines, Prosecco often comes at a great price point, making it a fantastic choice for everyday enjoyment without compromising on quality. It requires much less time, labor, and cost to produce a sparkling wine using the Charmat Method. This is one major factor in explaining why Prosecco is less expensive than its counter-bubbly, Champagne. In fact, getting a great Prosecco for $10-15 is easy (just check out our Lot 50 Prosecco).

For Every Moment. Celebrate with Prosecco!

Whether you're marking a special milestone or simply enjoying a casual get-together, Prosecco is the perfect choice. Its approachable style, celebratory bubbles, and affordable price point make it a great companion for all occasions, big or small.
