March is National Women’s History Month – a time to honor women for their honorable contributions to our culture. In our case, we are talking about wine culture! The wine industry has been dominated by men for centuries, but more and more women are leading the wine world today than ever before. The 90+ Cellars wines featured here are all vinified by women winemakers.
Lot 137 Pinot Noir
Our Willamette Valley Pinot Noir, Lot 137, is made by Julia Cattrall, an award-winning winemaker whose roots run deep in the Oregon wine world. Julia started learning about viticulture from her father at age 7 on their 5th generation family farm.
The wine is bright ruby red in color with aromas of fresh raspberries and cranberries rising above a fragrant mix of rhubarb, crushed violets, clove and cedar. The cool and cloudy Oregon climate means that Pinot Noir is perfectly at home here, more Burgundian in style than its California counterpart, resulting in fresh, fruit forward wines with a slightly earthy character.
Lot 212 Shiraz
Our South Australian Shiraz, Lot 212, is made by Leisha Munro - a talented Australian-native winemaker that has a passion for cool climate wines and the Limestone Coast.
Shiraz thrives in South Australia, due to its long, warm summers and iron rich red-clay soils. Lot 212 is a sumptuous wine, structured and finessed, and full of juicy fruits like plums and blackberries, spice and a subtle smokiness.
Lot 23 Old Vine Malbec
The grapes used for Lot 23 come from well-established vineyards with vines that are over 25 years old. These mature vines are naturally balanced, producing fruit with exceptional concentration and complexity, which is reflected in the final wine. Traditional wine methods focus on minimal intervention, allowing the fruit’s true expression to shine through, enhancing both its aromatic profile and structural integrity. Notes of red plum, blackberries and baking spices emerge from the glass.
Lot 66 Riesling
Barbara Steffes, winemaker and true Moselan, says that steep slope wines are what makes her heart beat. It’s no wonder our Lot 66 Riesling from Steep Slopes in the Mosel Valley is one of her fabulous creations. The wine is hand harvested from some of the steepest slopes and carefully vinified to produce a wine that is aromatic and lively. Bursting with crisp notes of lemon-lime and pear mixed with more tropical notes and just a kiss of sweetness, this wine is a crowd pleaser.
Whether you're looking for something lighter in style (Pinot Noir or Riesling) a bit more structured (Lot 23), or some jammy peppery goodness (Shiraz), these fantastic wines will hit the spot and you know you’ll be supporting some amazing women in wine. Happy Women’s Wine Month!
